Class 4 Homework Summary

Assignment 1 - Heaven and Hell Research

Due: Saturday, September 26th, at 5PM
Format: 6 found images posted to your class blog as a single post titled "Heaven and Hell Research", accompanied by two paragraphs analyzing the imagemakers' methods for eliciting positive and negative emotional and rational associations from viewers.

Collect three images in which you feel the treatment of the image leads a viewer to a positive reaction to the content of the image. Collect three more images in which you think the images treatment (construction, composition, processing) leads a viewer toward forming a negative view of the literal content of the image. In plain language what has the artist done to make you the viewer feel good or bad about the things depicted in the image. This is not about personal opinion about what things you like and don't like, instead it is about what things artists do to manipulate viewer perception of an otherwise neutral subject matter. Collect your six images. Post them two your class blog. After the positive images write a paragraph detailing the specific strategies you think the artists used to elicit a positive viewer response to the image subject matter. Do the same kind of thing in response to the negative images, but detail what elicits negative response.

Assignment 2 - Heaven and Hell Statement of Intent

Due: Saturday, September 26th, at 5PM
Format: as a written statement posted to your class blog as a separate post labeled "Heaven and Hell Statement of Intent"

Develop and write a statement of intent which details the essence of what you believe to be superlatively fabulous and conversely intensely horrific. What is the essence of your own heaven and what is the essence of your own hell? Once you have describe these two states as abstractions, detail what kind of imagery you might use to depict said rational/emotional/spiritual/physical states. Next detail what kinds of strategies you might use, in image composition, development, and processing, to encourage or provoke a viewer to see your subject matter in the light that you see it. Post this statement to your blog as detailed in "Format" above.

Assignment 3 - Heaven and Hell Rough Draft 1

Due: Monday, September 28th at 9AM
Format: As 6 working (draft) images ready for on screen short critique (jpegs would be best)

Construct 6 rough drafts which attempt to accomplish the aims you detailed in your Heaven and Hell Statement of Intent. Construct 3 "heavens" and 3 "hells." You may use your own imagery and or combine these with appropriated stock imagery. If you are using stock imagery, only use parts of the appropriated images please. In other words, if you use work which is not your own, you will need to figure out how to make it your own through segmentation, abstraction, and processing. These images are sketches or rough drafts that will help further define your direction for this project.
