Class 02 Homework Summary

c02_a1
Studio: Filter Recipes
Due: at the beginning of next class in the form of digital files. September 14th 9AM.

The goal of this exercise is to use the often useless filters within Photoshop (PS) to construct a sequence of processes that result in what you believe is a useful stylization tool. I will expect you to be able to verbally explain how you think your resulting effect is useful and what types of images it is suited to. This exercise will require a fair amount of experimentation for you to discover results that are useful and appealing to you.
  1. Construct 3 filter recipes using PS filters (not image adjustments).
  2. Each filter recipe should be constructed out of a sequence of a minimum of five separate filter usages. (you may use a filter more than once if it suits your purposes.)
  3. Once you have developed your recipes, apply each of the processing sequences to at least five different images (which you think are appropriate for the recipe).
  4. Type up the specific steps and settings of each recipe. Save them in one word document named c02_a1_filters_lastnamef.doc .
  5. Place all of your original and processed images in a folder and label the folder c02_a1_filters_lastnamef .

Studio: Cropped Compositions
Due: at the beginning of class on Monday September 14th
Format: digital files (originals and cropped images)

Start with 12 images from your image archive. From each of these twelve (parent) images compose new compositions by cropping away parts of the original. Do this three times for each parent image. Do your best to construct the most compelling compositions you can. In total you will end up with 48 files (12 parents and 36 children). The only manipulations you are making in this exercise are selection, cropping, and possibly rotation. Name your files such that the children sit next to their individual parent files when sorted alphabetically. Place all of your original and corpped images in a folder and label the folder c02_a2_crops_lastname .

Digital Imaging Artist Research (and Presentation)
Due: Presentations will be on Monday the 21st of September
Format: 5 minute verbal presentation in class including presentation of imagery plus a brief written research source summary.

Identify and research a digital artist who makes primarily screen based or print based static 2D work. Pick someone who's work interests you aesthetically but even more importantly pick someone who's process interests you. Gather images of this artist's work and learn more about her/his methods of making. You will need to develop your presentation from information coming from a minimum of three sources.

Digital Imaging in Modern Media
Due: due in class September 14th
